It is the time of summer that my children start getting into a familiar routine, wanting more screen time and saying "I don't know what to do".
Before school ended, I had them each write a list of 50 things to do this summer - things that didn't include my assistance in any way (write a letter to Grandma, sweep the garage, organize closet, etc.). The first few weeks of vacation, my 13 year son never looked at the list. He created lots of new Knex structures that are still occupying our lower level family room. He also has re-read all five Harry Potter books (that is 2,700 pages!). Then he went to camp and upon return, he lost his focus, not knowing what to do with his time. He seemed lost until I reminded him of his list. He took a look at it, and has found his place again without relying on TV or computer to entertain him.
If you didn't prepare your children for the summer "blues" with a list of things to do, it isn't too late. Or, check out these
Boredom Busters.
